All rating are just my own opinion. All movies you will find here are compared within the sci-fi genre. Oh, by the way, you will find here some occasional big budget cinema reviews – they are marked with *. There are not so many of them, so I decided to not create a separate page.
Just to have some point of reference: some of my very favorite movies are “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”, ”Drive”, “Lost In Translation”, “Stalker”, “Mulholland Drive”, ”Coffee and Cigarettes”. Of course, there is lots and lots of other stuff I adore, but these are particularly very important to me.
Directors that influenced me most are Tarkovsky, Jarmusch, Lynch, Wes Anderson, Kubrick, Coen brothers, Tarantino, Cronenberg, Spielberg, Polanski, Guillermo del Toro. There are many others that I appreciate and admire, but these are most essential.
Some of recent big budget sci-fi I think is just awesome – “Pacific Rim”, “The Watchmen”, “Edge of Tomorrow”. Among the sci-fi classics – “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1956), “Stalker”, “Alien 1/2”, “Terminator 2”, “Jurassic Park”, “Metropolis”, “The Matrix”.
Most reviews here are independent movies. Of course, there is no precise definition of what is independent since the rules of the games have change since ”The Jaws” and ”Star Wars” were released, but let’s say it’s something below $20 millions, not distributed or produced (normally) by a big studio or with limited release and with an independent spirit. Will we consider “Children of Men” an independent movie? It has $70 million budget and distribution by Universal, but it it still a wonderful science fiction that does not feel commercial, because Alfonso Cuaron maintained his creative freedom. It’s a movie with big budget (though is still pretty small to be a Hollywood blockbuster), but with an independent spirit and feel. Still, it is an exception.
